Well after careful consideration and after doing the whole routing of registering Matthew for Kindergarten in fall we have decided not to send him to public school K next year.
Jerry and I have been conflicted about this for the last year and given his birthdate and maturity level we feel he is just not ready. Academically he is ready but emotionally and physically he is not. We just see huge difference in him compared to others his age who are very close in birthdays. We think in the end it will be best.
Then we were on a mission to decide where we were going to send him next year. I dont want to send him back to Preschool Academy because they only go through PreK and I dont want him with 4 year olds. Since he is academically ready I dont want him to repeat the curriculum. So we researched and got alot of advice from family and friends and have decided to send him to Kindergarten but at a Montessori school. I think this will challenge him academically but also allow him to catch up maturity wise. At the end of next year we will decide to send him to Public or keep him another year to repeat K at Montessori. They have assured me the curriculum changes and since they are taught at individual levels that will probably be the best environments for him. I also like that it is full day rather than half day and I love that they get social studies, science and geography which is something he will not get in public K.
This will make him one of the oldest going through his school years but I think it's best for him. It's becoming more and more the norm to keep summer babies back a year especially boys. I was really nervous that he would be in classes with kids who were held back just for that reason last year who were already 6 and come September througout the year the kids will all start turning 6. He will have just turned 5 in July.
So, Jerry and I go on Monday to tour the school and get him setup for testing and such. I'm actually really excited and feel very at ease with this decision and the school we have most likely chosen :-)
